On Being a Child of God

I am a Child of God…

I am a Friend of God…

I am a Daughter of the King…

I use these phrases all the time, as I am sure many of you might as well.

But what do they mean?

First, who has the privilege of being called a child of God?

Child of God

Let’s begin by clarifying that not everyone is a child of God.

So, basically while everyone is a creation of God – everyone is created by God and in His image (Genesis 1:27) – not everyone is a child of God because you only get adopted into God’s family when you accept that you are a sinner, ask God to forgive you for all your sins, and ask Jesus come into your heart and life to make you more holy.

But once that happens, how do you act like you’re a different person (because you should and you should want to)? That brings us to our second point.

What does it mean to be a child of God?

Being a child of God means that you continue to live your life, but you’re purpose changes, you’re attitude changes, and you’re outlook on life changes.

Here are a few things that you should look for in your life as you seek to further define and align your life with God’s purpose for you:

~ You are no longer doing what’s right because you have to, but because you want to.
~ You are no longer worried as much (or at all) about what other people think about you.
~ You don’t mind praying in public because your love for your Father is greater than their ridicule.
~ You don’t mind reading your Bible in public because you value your relationship with the Lord more than your appearance to the world.
~ You are not afraid to share the gospel because your love for the lost is greater than your fear of their hate.
~ You realize that, as a child of God, you will be disciplined for your sins and tested by the Lord in order for your faith and reliance on Him to be strengthened…and you are okay with that – no matter the outward appearance or earthly cost.
~ When you love, hope, and have courage with and for those whom society considers weak and unimportant.

In all these ways, you are showing more of your Heavenly Father for the world to see.

When you live a life that mirrors the wonderful nature, power, magnificence, beauty, justice, and love of God, you are bound to make enemies…

But you are also bound to make your Heavenly Father proud…

And that should matter most…

as a growing Child of God?
What are some of your fears?
What are some of your hopes?
